How Does Your Rank System Work?
Our ranking system starts at 10th Kyu, or level, and goes to 1st Kyu.
After that, one tests as a Yudansha (Black Belt) and also has 10
levels. The amount of time it takes to test depends on the students
hard work and skill.
Students must earn each level by passing a test with at least 80%.
How Long Does It Take To Earn A Black Belt?
While the length of time obviously depends on the individual, with
dedication and committed training one could achieve Shodan (1st degree
Black Belt) in around 4 years. There are, however, factors that can
alter this time. It is recommended that you attend 2 classes a week to
start, and also practice at home when you can.
The important thing to remember is to enjoy the journey, and focus
on your skill and ability rather than your rank.
What Is A Class Like?
Classes are held in a friendly but formal 'moving meditation'. We
begin with a formal bow-in and ninpo poem, followed by stretching and
warm-ups.
We then begin working on some basic tumbling skills and into
practicing our individual rank requirements. Next some drilling,
Randori (real-time practice), etc.
Lastly, we end as we began, with a formal bow-out.
Everything is done at each individuals pace. As a student
progresses to new levels, the student moves to a more advanced class
which will challenge the student's skill.
Do You Offer A Free Class To Try It Out?
Yes. We are happy to offer a free class to try it out. We also offer a
4 week trial for those that would like to have a longer trial period.
What Should I Wear To A Class?
Students wear a black gi (uniform), black socks (or indoor tabi) and
black tee-shirt. As a convenience to our students we offer these
through our dojo.
If you are trying out a class it is appropriate to wear something
loose fitting that you can move comfortably in and socks. It does not
have to black.
I Have A Changing Work Schedule, How Can I Attend Classes?
